Newborn Essentials — What You Actually Need

The registry checklists will tell you to buy 47 things. Half of them will still have tags in six months. Here are the twelve items that showed up in every single reply when we asked new parents "what did you actually use every day?"

The twelve

  • 4-pack muslin swaddles — swaddle, burp cloth, sunshade, tummy-time mat. The most versatile fabric in the house.
  • Contoured changing pad — anywhere, anytime.
  • Baby wash cloths (6+) — never enough.
  • Hooded cotton towel — the good one, the ugly gift ones stay in the closet.
  • Silicone finger toothbrush — from month three, gum care matters.
  • Nursing pillow with a washable cover — the cover is the reason.
  • Portable changing pad — for the diaper bag, permanently.
  • Diaper bag organizer inserts — turns any tote into a diaper bag.
  • Two burp cloths per outfit — trust the parents on this one.
  • Bath thermometer — sanity check for the first three months.
  • Wet bag — for wet swimsuits, dirty onesies, the diaper you can't throw out until you get home.
  • A stroller hook — one hook holds groceries, diapers, coffee.
What we don't buy for a newborn. Wipe warmer, bottle sterilizer with a display, changing table dresser combo, baby shoes.
